Becoming Baratta’s Italian Restaurant

Des Moines’ best Italian restaurant didn’t just appear out of nowhere. The Barardi family used to own a home that sat exactly where Baratta’s sits today. The Baratta family purchased the home and Baratta’s was born. Starting as a small grocery store on the south side in the 1950s, Italian foods, flavors, and ingredients were sold.

The Baratta’s sold their Des Moines home and shop in 1993 to three local Lincoln High alums: Joe Gatto and Curt and Lisa Kruger. Though the Baratta’s no longer own their shop, Joe and Lisa have maintained the charm and beauty by using classic family recipes including lasagna, peppersteak, steak de Burgo and cannolis. In addition to traditional Italian food, dishes such as chicken amaggio, southwest pasta, pollo penne and everyone’s favorite, our peppercheese soup have been added bringing in a wide variety of flavors to the menu.

Expanding Baratta’s Locations and our Italian Food Menu

Our menu wasn’t the only thing that expanded with Baratta’s Italian Restaurant: multiple locations opened, the decor was updated, and a full-service catering business was added to the brand’s already impressive repertoire.

Mayor Preston Daniels awarded Baratta’s a key to the city as recognition for our contributions to neighborhood schools and churches. The Baratta’s Italian Restaurant team creates the most delicious recipes and is attentive to every little detail. When you come to Baratta’s of Des Moines, you are treated like family. That’s why Baratta’s has been a Des Moines tradition for nearly 50 years.
